JTI - Digital Signage conquers filling stations and kiosks

More and more corporations are increasingly using digital signage solutions. Among them, Japan Tobacco International (JTI). Japan Tobacco Inc. Group is one of the leading tobacco manufacturers, and actually the third largest in the world. The company has employees in more than 40 locations and distributes some of the most popular cigarette brands such as Winston, Mevius and Camel.

Modern, informative, dynamic. JTI was searching for a prominent advertising medium at independent kiosks and filling stations to increase the presence for the brands distributed and customer proximity. The mission was clear in no time: The digital age should enter the point of sale in the form of a unique design. At the request of JTI, highly flexible digital signage installations at kiosks and in the shops of filling stations in Switzerland should draw attention to the products on the shelves.

The notion of the display arrangement in the shelving system was already there. The missing part was the right partner for planning and high-quality execution.

The initial situation was jointly analysed and requirements for hardware, compatibility, assembly and customisation were discussed in a briefing. We created a concept and developed the first prototype soon after.

Following the first 3D visualisation of the draft design and a successful pilot phase, rollout took place. Thus far, a total of 19 displays have been installed at eight different locations.

axxiv NUC mini PC

NEC's latest display technologies were employed to ensure maximum productivity, efficiency and performance. Public displays designed for continuous operation were installed using state-of-the-art LCD panels for the accurate display of every detail with future-proof connection options.

The screens are controlled via NUC mini-PCs of the private computer label axxiv. These feature brilliant graphics and particularly responsive performance, wrapped up in a tiny design.

Besides providing hardware, the offer also included software and on-site installation.

The comprehensive software solution for digital signage is designed in such a flexible way that contents of various formats (picture, film, presentation) from the database are quickly embedded and easily managed.

The outright worry-free service package for hardware maintenance, monitoring and remote maintenance come tailored to the customer to increase high availability and productivity. All data is hosted on a central server. Different brand messages on the display can thus be either centrally or site-specific controlled via the central content management system.

By means of a two-day user training course, the media agencies and JTI’s team were trained in handling the content management system and creating content. Each of the agencies received four desktop monitors and two NUC mini-PCs of the axxiv brand for the purpose of testing realistic scenarios.

The challenge

Major differences in the infrastructure of the sites required a digital signage system that easily integrates into the standardised environment of filling stations as well as into the heterogeneous infrastructure of kiosks in free trade.

The given preconditions required a technically smart approach, which had simple and modular mounting options at its core that would take digital signage to the highest level of flexibility.

Our display solution offered JTI the following functionalities:


  • Set up with one, two or three monitors
  • Each two monitors are powered by a mini-PC
  • The installation of the display solution offers wall, ceiling and floor display without any changes to the design


  • Monitors can be individually controlled or synchronised to display content as a total area
  • Content management can happen centrally or independent of the location via a web application
  • User and access rights management: Several people can create and manage content
  • Centralised and automated system monitoring in terms of content playback and performance
  • Remote management via network connection, including remote start and error diagnostics
